Came down this morning to hear strange noise from the boiler. It was trying to fire, apparently giving up, and then repeating in an endless loop. In sync with this, relays were clicking and the CH demand light was going and and off, but not (apparently) in a fault condition. The flame sensor remained off.
In my dazed and just-awake state, I didn't notice what the fan and pump were doing.
I resolved the problem by turning up the CH stat (on the boiler, not the room stat). The previous behaviour immediately stopped, it ignited, and the flame sensor light came on as normal. The boiler has operated fine since then.
I can't now replicate the problem, eg by turning down that stat.
Edit: Boiler is approx 9 yrs old. Was last services 13 months ago.
