Wood finish - walnut

I have an ar turntable that has a walnut housing. I read that you can refinish the wood by a wipe with lighter fluid to remove any old polish and then use an oil to refinish the wood. Danish oil?
I just want to help the wood survive but avoid a new look

It's probably varnished which may not dissolve with fluid. Really it just needs cleaning. I would just wipe it thoroughly with meths and then use some ordinary furniture wax on it -not oil since oil can't penetrate varnish.
