Can anybody tell me why my boiler has stopped working. Noheating or hot water. I have tried reset and turning off and on to no avail. The flame light is off and when hot water tap turned on the light flashes quickly. Also when i turn heating on it lights up but heating dosent come on. Any suggestions .THANKS FROM A CHILLY FAMILY.

turn the boiler off -

lift off the front case of the boiler - the white metal panel above the controls, this allows you access to the viewing window. do not touch ANY of the screws under this cover, use your eyes only.

turn boiler back on

open a hot tap - boiler should show demand and initiate start-up sequence

can you hear the fan start up? can you see sparks over the electrodes in the viewing window?

when it goes into the fault state:
which lights are on?
are they flashing once per second (slowly)
or flashing quickly (5 times per second)

Hi hooting owl, done what you advised and there was a noise but not sure if its the fan. The only light that comes on is the water light and after a few seconds it flashes about 5 tmes a second

if it is the hot water light that is flashing rapidly, then the boiler has detected a problem with the air flow through the boiler.
the noise you can hear may be the pump and it could be that the fan is not running. could be a defective fan or it could be the electronic control board, could be a defective cable. if the fan is running a defective air proving switch or a fault in the sensing tube that links the fan to the proving switch or a blocked flue may be the fault. sometimes snow gets into the flue, melts and then deposits water in the sensing tube. this can sometimes damage the proving switch.

all of these faults are not something that you should NOT DIY with - if you get it wrong, you can be in serious trouble as they all contribute to the safe operation of the boiler. you really need to find a local registered gas engineer (who is experienced with combi repairs - many are not!) to help you.

a fault in the proving switch is fairly inexpensive to repair (circa £80) whilst the pcb and fan are both expensive parts to buy (£120 - £150) with fitting on top (£50-£60).

if the fan is not running, then i would be thinking about a british gas fixed price repair (around £160) if you have problems finding a local gas engineer to help you.
