I am trying to replace the washer of a leaking tap. I have taken off the cap but cannot get further than this and I cannot unscrew the tap as the screw cap/head has worn out - (not a phillips head). Any ideas as to how I can unscrew the screw?
If it's a standard plain tap with a crosshead, you can usually undo the upper body part enough to get a spanner to the hex undeneath, without taking the cross head off.
"Advanced washer-less valve systems give maintenance free life"
take it back to B&Q and charge em for your wasted time. It's probably a ceramic disc tap. If grit gets betwwen the fitting surfaces of the 2 discs, it makes micro grooves and hence the drip. Silicone gel will help (for a time) replacing them can be difficult without the help of a well stocked local plumbing merchant.
