just did a one day course at honeywell and forgot to ask the chap==== on hotwater only on mid position valve why is the orange wire live when all is required to fire up boiler and pump is cylinder stat on demand. thus it doesnt matter if the vlave/motors are broken for h/w demand as the valcve always defaults to port b open?? have i got this right? woulld just like to know why orange is live? cheers

You obviously were not paying attention!

On a Y plan the orange wire and the call wire from the cylinder stat are both connected to the same terminal (8 in the diagram below). When HW only is on this terminal gets its supply via the HW stat not via the orange wire. The orange wire only appears to be live because it is connected to the same terminal.

Provided the valve is not stuck the spring will make it default to HW port open when the valve is not energised.

will be live cause its in the same connection as the stat live to the pump/boiler until hw satisfied then the grey becomes live and approx 100v on orange.
then when ch called for their will be 230v on orange.
