C plan is for older systems not allowed with gas any longer, where hot water circulation is by gravity. Necessary for slodi fuel.
S plan and Y plan allow for fully independent timed temeperature controlled pumped heating and hot water.
In Y plan there is one valve (mid position valve) with an inlet and two outlets, maybe that is where the name comes from.
S plan uses a completely dual system, one two channel programmer (usually, but two singhle channel ones would work as well) a stat for each and a valve for each. I prefer this system.
