People who don't vote should shut up about politics

Just so you know I'd never want to take away the righ to vote or not vote. I just think if someone chooses not to vote, that anything they have a politcal opinion on is moot.
What about if you have no confidence in any of the parties putting themselves forward on that ballot paper? To vote would be to put yourself in a position of being a hypocrite. In effect, your vote would mean that you have no right to complain, since your action has contradicted itself.

Think skitz, that this is edging towards that reductio ad absurdum case ;)

I think you should vote for the closest party that represents your views...if there isn't one (and i'm guessing if they are passionate enough about it to complain about it, that it is important to them) they should stand themselves.

If it isn't important to them, then fine, don't vote...but if it isn't important they wouldn't be complaining about things.

Not at all. I could quite easily find fundamentally flawed philosophies and policies in all of those standing for election which would mean that I simply could not vote for any of them if I stick by my principles. In fact, it is possibly a more coherent argument to suggest that if you vote for something that you are not totally in agreement with (not just the line of best fit as you suggest), then you haven't the right to complain afterwards.

None of this means that I have to have a serious interest in standing for election myself. It does mean that I have a principled reason not to cast my vote, and a subsequent right to protest against any political event since I most definitely did not want it to occur (indeed more strongly that anyone who did cast a vote)

This is the complete antithesis of your assertion.

A very lengthy "na uh!"
;)
If someone can't use their brain to see the best fit for their beliefs (as long as you are human and you are voting for other humans you will not find a exact match) and can't be bothered to do anything about it themselves, they obviously lack desire to make a difference. In which case..why should we listen to what they think will make a difference?

Choice of nazis or labour...i know who i'd vote for.
Choice of Nazis or Communists...i'd stand myself.
In either case, not doing anything, to me atleast, is irresponsible.
"It is bad enough when good men do nothing"

There's good and bad in anyone. But if I want perfecton and it's not there, I'm entirely in the right not to buy the product.

I'd not stand at all. I don't want to go into the playgound at all, and have every right to complain, shout and scream from the surrounding fence my thoughts about all of those within, safe in the knowledge that I'm above the criticism "well you voted for them so put up with it"

In either case, not doing anything, to me atleast, is irresponsible.

I take it you would be in favour of hanging conscientious objectors then, just like the good old days ;)

For me, purposely doing nothing is doing something. Bit like atheism

Indeed, but you're not choosing to have no product...you're just letting someone else decide what product you get.

Well, the next response would be, well you didn't vote against them, they had a chance at getting it right...a nonvoter never does

No, no. People not wanting something to happen I can understand.
They have made their choice. By being atheist...you have had your say.

Simply not doing anything, is lazy.

Can't be bothered to quote (lazy I guess  )

If you "listen to all the arguments" being put forward and then decide to vote for your "best fit", then fine. I'll not argue with this.

However (you knew it was coming ;) ), if you listen to all the arguments and then decide that you cannot in principle bring yourself to give anyone the mandate to carry out your wishes, then you are being a darned sight less lazy than someone who "has always voted" for "x" and will continue to do so regardless of whether they have looked into the details or not.

So, like an atheist, I will have made an informed and reasoned judgement not to attend any church. Quite unlike those "brainwashed" into following a stance without critical review.
