compression fittings on gas pipe under floor

Quite. Nobody likes doing freebies, but in the course of a boiler change I've done a few inclusive things like that just to make the client feel happy. A ball valve or stoptap is fine. I would draw the line at swapping a bog though!

couldn't agree more.
the customers nowdays don't seem to be like they use to be then you would bend other backwards for them.
now they think you owe them a favour.

times i've spent hours on here to locate a part or number that another plumber has just told the customer to fit a complete unit,
so you think i'll help you for half the price get you out of trouble then when you go out your way to help they come back and say don't worry
i'll leave it for now.

no wonder the propulation can't be a*sed now days.

If it is, as seems likely, under a floorboard, and he's that concerned, he could have changed the fittings in less time than he spent talking about it. I think 50 notes is seriously taking the pi55. OP, insist that he shows you the document stating that it is ID, I don't think it is.

That girl in Unforgiven tried giving Clint Eastwood one, but he said nah... I'm sound cheers.

Clint's got a colt magnum, a cigar, a hat and a face that's ten times as deadly as the first two, he doesn't need free stuff.

I give away quite a bit of free stuff on eBay if the person I'm talking to is funny or interesting. Quite often, I'll stick lollipops in with power tools, or send people on the chemistry forums in the US envelopes full of tea bags, sweets and bits I have spare (like PTFE stir bars etc) if they've bounced a parcel out to the UK for me. One guy bought almost a grands worth of DeWalt tools off me and was really funny to talk to over the phone, so I gave him a pair of BOC goggles, a TCT grinding disc, a 75mm twisted wire brush for the 3hp grinder and lollipops for his kids.

At the same time, I am becoming more and more careful of doing things for free. EVERYONE wants 'mates rates', even when they're not a mate. I'm the kind of person who'll do that, and it only leads to major problems.

But anyway, I have seen plumbers using compressions in screeds. Not being a plumber, or corgi qualified, I am kind of curious as to why they wouldn't just solder it. Surely it doesn't take that much longer, the union is a bit cheaper (I think) and I constantly find people complaining about leaky compressions.

I was told by a Transco man that compression joints on gas, anywhere, are not illegal. He said it is just common sense to have all copper soldered joints unless at an appliance for disconnection purposes. That I think we all know.

Copper tube and fittings
Copper tube to EN 1057 can be used
for gas installations. It can be jointed using
EN 1254 capillary or compression fittings.
According to BS 6891 compression
fittings should only be used where they
are readily accessible for tightening and
inspection. This means that they cannot
be buried underground, buried in the
structure or used in ducts or under floors.

So to all rgi`s, Do not use them on ground floors or cellars, as this is under floors. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Right, i phoned him this morning (didn't want to but i was a bit chewed) and he said it was only N.C.S. and that he had advised the wife that he could do it then and there for the price of materials (about £20) or he could come back after xmas but it would then be £50, obviously more time/travel etc which is fair enough, the turning the gas off bit was to do with a restrictor elbow under the floor as well which he changed on friday, the other fittings are further under the floor (less accessible) so its getting done on monday. Thanks to all for the advice. As for the wife i'm taking her to the doctors on monday to have her ears syringed.

I take it that you have never heard of a suspended concrete floor. :?:

Hi seco services

I quite agree, this thread being a perfect example with the O P not even having the decency to leave one thanks.

That's because you told him what he didn't want to hear. :p
