damp patches on new plaster- pattern follows adhesive patches

Hi Ree, Thanks for the questions. The original plaster was 'blown' due to water damage and poor ventilation. We have a wood burning stove in the middle of the living room. It is a single skin between the kitchen and the living room. The floor in the kitchen is concrete whilst the one in the...

damp patches on new plaster- pattern follows adhesive patches

Hi Guys and Gals, I've recently removed all old plaster from my living room and kitchen. The plaster was 'blown'. So plasterboards were used to cover the bare bricks using dot and dab, followed by a skim coat of plaster. Watermark started to emerge after a few months. We were advised to remove...

    Builder overcharging?

Yes, definitely educate not remonstrate. Being 'bashed' at such forums just defeats the aim of this forum. As one previous chap said, reel it in and give someone else the bashing.

    New soil stack?

Just had my bathroom refitted. Previous pan was a tall one and rested on a toilet base riser. For some strange reason, the soil stack was much higher than conventional ones. Not sure if that has to do with the age of the house, built in the 1950s or that the previous owners had one fitted to...

Bathroom refit but backflow because toilet not high enough

Do I pay the plumber to raise the toilet so that I don't get backflow of jobbies? I didn't want a new soilpipe 'cos I thought it would be too much work but now the toilet is not high in relation to the soil pipe. I've already paid for the job and have been in contact since to let him know...

    Toiletvator

Hi Andy, It's a base for the toilet; so instead of putting a raised seat on top of the pan, you put it on the base of the toilet. I don't have pics with me but basically, it's a bendy tube from the rear of the pan, and it turns towards the soil pipe. But the backflow of bits from Jobbie No2...

    Toiletvator

Advice please? I've just had my bathroom refitted but kept the old soil pipe. The previous owner had a rather high pan and I thought I would just do the same, i.e. raise the base of the toilet with a plinth. However, backflow after flushing the toilet after doing jobbie no2 suggests the...

Can a double-glaze man cut out wall below window to fit door

Thanks guys! I was hesistant about commissioning the DG man to do the job, esp when he failed to mention about being careful not to ruin the DPC or avoiding the airbricks. He gave the cheapest quote, and he was the only person to call us to tell us that we really want him to do the job! Tat too...

Can a double-glaze man cut out wall below window to fit door

I want to put a long piece of glass on an existing doorway, then cut out a section of the brick wall under the existing window frame which is 6foot wide. A double-glaze chap said he could do the job for £1500. I thought that only builders can deal with masonry work. Any advice?

Builders came, saw what needed doing and disappeared!

Not too surprised by your response. Of course there are bits and pieces that 'magically appear' which we ignorant non-trades people cannot appreciate. My information sources are not just merely from B&Q shops etc but also from people who are in the trade. Incidentally, they are the ones who warn...
