    Cold Radiator

I live in a tennement flat and have replaced all radiators. All heat up except the large on in my living room which is cold at bottom and slightly warm at the top. I've been doing up my bedroom recently and took the radiator off to replace with a new one, I change the valves two nights ago...

    Single socket in loft

I need a single socket up in my loft (to plug in a booster for a TV ariel) I was planning to run this from my consumer unit as a separate circuit but I have it in the back of my mind that I would need a thicker cable than a normal 2.5. Is this the case? Thanks

New radiator hot at top, cold at bottom.

I recently installed a new double radiator in my living room (1800mm x 650mm) It's a lot bigger than all my other radiators in the house and only heats up at the top. The bottom of the radiator is cold. I have tried adjusting the lockshield valve but the bottom still won't heat up. Any other...

    Levelling uneven floor

I'm in a top floor flat and put laminate flooring down in the kitchen last year. The problem is the floor is really uneven, it runs off by about 10cm over the length of the room. I'd really like to get this level and lay some tiles. Is this difficult to do? If I had to get someone in to do it...

    Painting Plaster

I have had my flat plastered recently and the plasterer recommended using a 50 / 50 mix of cheap emulsion and water to seal the plaser. I was just wondering what the advantage is of adding water. Is it better to do this or could I just use the emulsion? Thanks

    Painting new doors

I have just had 6 knotty pine internal doors hung. I noticed on the packaging that the joiners threw away that the doors should be primed before hanging and that they shouldn't be hung in a newly plastered house. I had the flat skimmed last week and the doors wewn't primed by the joiners before...

    Skirting Boards and Plastering

I am getting my flat skimmed next week. I have removed all the old skirting and attached grounds for the new stuff (not as tall as the original skirting but as tall as I could get) Currently the grounds don't come out as far as the plaster on the walls, will they need to be thicker than the...

    Spraying timbers in loft.

I live in a tenement flat and have just recently had a new tile roof completed. The scaffolding is still up as they are also fixing a chimney, about 2 days ago was the first decent rain we've had since the roof was finished and sure enough there was a leak near the skylight. I have just heard...

    Securing toilet

I have had a number of problems with the bathroom fitters who have just finished my bathroom. The major one is the installation of the toilet. They have put some sort of sealent under the bowl and told us not to sit on it for a day which is fair enough but a day later there is loads of...

    Poor qqality grout job

The bathroom fitters I was using have just left, they are coming back tonight to collect their tools. The last thing they did was grout the floor. This looks terrible and already has cracks up and down the length of the bathroom. I notice when I step on a tile there is some movement, is this...

    Grout problem?

I am in the process of having a new bathroom installed. I decided to get this done professionally as I don't have any tiling experience. They have put all the tiles up and have now started grouting, when I looked last night the grout seemed really lumpy and rough looking. They haven't...

    Bad ceiling

I'm doing up my spare room and have stripped all wallpaper. The ceiling was covered in a think polystyrene type paper and painted orange. Underneath the ceiling seems to be in bad condition. There are a couple of areas with nasty looking spores on them and a couple of nice big cracks. Any...

    Fixing boards to wall

I recently bought 5 large panels to fix to the wall of my spare room behing my desk. I bought them from Ikea where they were on display in the same position but the panels are actually end panels for one of their kitchens so don't come with the fixings. I asked if I could buy the fixings...

    Damp

I live in a flat, I've just removed the old plaster walls in the living room as I'm about to get the room skimmed and the walls were a bit crumbly. I can now see why, the wood holding them in place was rotten and soaking wet, the inside of the exterior walls is also wet (sandstone) before I...

    Skimming Walls

I'm about to get all the walls skimmed in my flat (Living room, kitchen, hall, bathroom + 2 bedrooms) I've decided it's best to get a pro in to do this for me. Can anyone tell me what sort of disruption this involves. Will I need to move out for a couple of days / weeks? Cheers

    Lamps

I was just speaking to someone who has wired their living room so that all the lamps can be switched on from a switch on the wall and also turned on/off independently. Anyone know the best way to achieve this? Thanks

    Wiring Central Heating Controls

I've just replaced my central heating controls and can't get them wired properly (I'm in Scotland and it's freezing!) I've replaced an old Landis & Gyr programmer with a new Drayton Tempus Seven. I also bought a new wiring centre, there are the following 16 connections in it - ROOM STAT -...

    Filler behing plasterboard

I've put up a new wall that is at about a 20 degree angle to the wall next to it. Because of the angle I can't fix the end of the plasterboard to the frame. Instead, the plasterboard overhangs the frame by about 10cm (the 10cm area havng a triangular gap behind it.) When i press against this...

    Wiring Room Thermostat

I bought a new digital room thermostat to replace the old one that was in my hall. The new one (Drayton Digistat 1) says that it replaces most standard room thermostats but I'm having problems with the wiring. The wiring schematic for the new thermostat has - 1. Common 2. Heating...
