To remove or not to remove?

I guess I must say this in a whisper... who is Softus and why mustn't we wake him? Is he the dragon who is sleeping in those big skips we see dotted about? Or the Bogeyman behind the door? Or even - say this very quietly so we don't frighten the kids - a building inspector?

    Shower replacement...

Hi Guys, A few years ago I was conned, like many others, by a street hustler offering a new shower for a great price... yeah, right... I was sold an Instaflow 2000 for over £1000 about 15 years ago! That included installation. Basically it was C**P! turning the temperature control it went...

To remove or not to remove?

My 1950s house has asbestos cement gutters and down-pipes, which I have painted in the past, but as I get older I don't fancy too much ladder-acrobatics... they do seem to be in good condition still. Is it worth the hassle of replacing them with plastic, or are they best left as they are...

Old fuse box - new ECU?

Andy - is there a safety aspect to the current - sorry, present - wiring? I have checked with my trusty Fluke meter and not found any obvious problems - but I am a computer engineer not a sparky...

Old fuse box - new ECU?

Thanks, Guys, Carlos - the kit is under the stairs, and is not very convenient if the meter reader comes and we have to clear the way for him... Andy - not sure what the MET is... We have some black rubber-insulated wiring and some grey stuff... do I need it all checked-out? This is an...

Old fuse box - new ECU?

I have a cartridge fuse-box in my 1950s house. Can I get the local Electricity company to replace it with a modern switch box? I imagine it does not meet current (oops...) regulations? Cartridge fuses are a pain and resetting a switch (not that I have needed to do it yet) is so much...

    Loft/rafter panels...

Thanks, Gentlemen, I will do as you suggest. I presume the foil side is the outer side when used on the walls? on the roofing-felt side I mean... It has surprised me how out-of-date the DIY manuals I bought from Readers Digest all that time ago have become - so much new and easier-to-use...

    Charles Kennedy Resigns

Poor old Charlie... remember George Brown, who had trouble standing up... and what about Churchill, on 2 bottles of Champers plus the odd Brandy or few... doesn't seem to have stopped him... At least Charlie had the Balls to admit his problem... it seems that addiction to power (Blairitis?)...

    Loft/rafter panels...

Hi, I am thinking of panelling-in my loft - 1950s house, huge loft timbers - any suggestions to panel in the rafters to create a warmer storage and occasional study area? Plenty of room to stand upright. I will floor the roof-space with mdf. There are so many products available in the...

    Parkray - possible leak...

Hi, I have just noticed a wet patch to the front left of my Parkray Consort 88 room heater which runs my central heating.. Can I add something to the header tank to stop this, or do I need a plumber/heating engineer... or is this a sign that the Parkray is on the way out? Next-door...

    Replacement c/h pump speed

Nige, The Gas lot wanted to charge £1000 per household to pipe gas to my end of the village... with British gas you could spread the cost via the gas bill, but when Transco took on the pipes that was no longer an option - they wanted paying up-front... so about 100 of us told them to get...

    Replacement c/h pump speed

Thanks to all who responded so quickly - what a great forum, I have been recommending the site to a number of friends and acquaintances... and customers too. I have been out at work, and have just lit the Parkray - remember all the ash and clinker and everything in the room covered in dust...

    Replacement c/h pump speed

Hi again, Replaced faulty (dead) pump with equivalent from Wickes - new pump has a 3-position speed setting. Original unit had an adjuster with no markings... instructions with new pump say what adjuster is but otherwise are as much use as a chocolate teapot. When running the pump, it can...

    Quarry-tiled floor

Yes, wood is one possibility. There are also some sheet materials, like Cushion-Floor which has a sealed surface with a foam-like base and is flexible... Apart from the cold surface, things dropped do not bounce a lot on quarry-tiles - only as they disintegrate!  Would the...
