    To DIYers planning a rewire

To the OP: Just wanted to say what a great thread..we will be doing a total rewire soon in a 1900's house that has barely been touched electric-wise since then. Everything has to come out...! Like you, I have been ploughing my way thru every bit of info I can find on this great website...

    Speedfit or traditional copper?

Again, thanks for all the replies and advice...believe me it has been EXTREMELY helpful...you guys rock! So, just one more question then, the $64000 one...what would you guys use in your own home if you were installing a new central heating system from scratch? plastic or copper? :D

    Speedfit or traditional copper?

Wow thanks guys..didn't expect so many replies or to cause a bit of controversy! sorry! It might help if I ask specific questions maybe? One thing that we think plastic might have the edge over copper is laying pipework alongside joists in a very long run from front to back of...

    Speedfit or traditional copper?

Hi guys...have done a search before posting on here for info on this, but found nothing. We have almost decided to use plastic speedfit-type tubing for putting in a completely new central heating system in the house we just bought (very old very run down and at the moment, uninhabitable...

    Two meters into one

Turns out that the supply to the Drs surgery is WELL dodgy...found all sorts of things that would make yer hair curl...for instance, old 60's style wiring with old bakelite adapters (well, thats what they look like anyway..) with wall lamps plugged into them. The whole place is a bit of a...

    Two meters into one

...for all your help..it has been very very helpful. Alas I fear I have opened up a very large can of worms...turns out that E-on are the ones who now have the account at the property. Found this out after 3-4 phone calls starting with a number I found on the website linked to in one of the...

    Two meters into one

Hi there... We have just bought a property that has a split electricity supply ie two meters. (property was a Drs surgery ground floor with a self-contained flat above.) Who do we have to contact to get the supply combined through one normal meter? We have no idea who the last electricity...

    underfloor heating?

Just wondering what you guys think of 'wet' underfloor heating..is it okay to consider or a definite no-no in your opinions. I am aware of the possible leakage problem, just want to know if there are any others, for instance, does the size and output of the boiler matter? I'm guessing it...

Attaching new loo to old cast soil stack?

Hi, Hope this is the right forum for this. Hope you guys can help...we want to put in a downstairs loo in a 1930's house that has the original cast soil stack. My questions are these: Would it be possible to join the loo waste pipe onto the original stack with some kind of connector? If...

Whats the worst can happen..shower question again

Thanks guys! I guess I should have used the 10mil in the first place...then I wouldn't have a worry. It's the fact that the place is rented that changes things; duty of care toward tenants etc and quite rightly too...I'll see what the assessor thinks, but I have this feeling that I will be...

Whats the worst can happen..shower question again

Okay, I have read everything I can find on this site about installing an electric shower, but have found some of the advice a bit confusing. We have just finished renovating a two bed terrace which is now being let out to 3 students, and one of the improvements we have made is putting in an...

    Weird one...(no spelling mistake!)

Good grief! disconnected several houses by removing one fuse?? Makes my problem small in comparison! Anyway, it seems this kind of thing is pretty common in that particular area, so I'm not too worried...not sure about the old boy next door tho...he's been there 33 years, and didn't have a clue...

    Weird one...(no spelling mistake!)

Wondering if the gurus on here have ever come across this...we have been updating a pre 1920's two bed terrace which was previously abandoned a few months ago. The property surprisingly didn't need too much doing where wiring was concerned, but after taking advice, we decided to put in a more...

    Choosing a Combi Boiler

Hiya..in my experience, a combi boiler will not cope with the hot water demands of a family who are likely to live in a 3 bed house...they can barely cope with hot water for a two bed terrace cottage type house with 3 people. Don't do it mate! :D
