Bathroom sink waste mystery item - what is it?

See the attached photo.

In short, I extracted this from inside the waste pipe under one the bathroom sinks. It sat inside the plastic waste pipe, and the plug sat on the top.

I obviously need to replace it, as it's got a hole in it (I assume that it was installed like this). However, I've searched Screwfix, B&Q, Wickes, etc - and can't find anything similar.

Can somebody give me the name of the item, and where could I buy a replacement?

Many thanks. Is it possible to buy just this or do I need a complete new trap?

Show us a photo of under the basin including the pipework, not close up as need to see general installation.(sinks in kitchens, basins in bathrooms).
