I've never been a cricket follower so I know nothing about this guy, but whenever one of these old commentators who've been doing it for years snuffs it they get lauded as 'legends' of some kind.
He may have been I don't know, just waiting for when the inevitable happens to Peter Alliss (hope it's a long way off). They'll have to laud him as a god.
