Hi - new to the site, so apologise for any diy ignorance.....

I am considering converting an agricultural barn (breeze block & asbestos cement roof) in to a daycare nursery.

I have very little idea what I am doing but will be getting builder etc to do the work....I just need to understand it.

The floor is between 8 and 10 inches of concrete and up til about 3 yrs ago had tractors dumping crops on it :)

I am hovering between a stud wall and a second breeze block wall (which would be a 6inch Turboblock apparently)

I want to overinsulate the space & am really stuggling with the ceiling. The trusses won't support it and finding something to span 10m seems very difficult...but we might have found something on line. It needs to support 8-10 inches of insulation and plasterboard as a ceiling (which will not be smooth...as rough is cheaper (apparently))

If I ever get this far I will paint the blocks and put in a dado at about 4 ft for the electrics, with a skirting at the bottem (and maybe at the top to finish it)

Thanks for listening - I have loads more ideas but I'll add to it if there is any interest :D

Very bad day today I got 2 quotes for removing the asbestos and they were very high :(

Get a quote for covering over the asbestos, it might prove cheaper, and help keep the building insulated. Aka kingspan metallic roof over the top, and Plasterboard inside. Have to check with a roofing company how their regulations work, but its another idea.

How tall are the kids gonna be? You could consider having the dado trunking higher so its out of reach of small fingers?

we had thought of the dado thanks - we are hoping for about 4 ft.......it makes it loads safer

Building regs are being a bit of a pain about encapsulating it - because there will be children in the building

Is the site still a farm?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that if it is, then in some circumstances you can bury asbestos on site. Maybe phone the local council and get their advice?

Really?

Gosh that sounds odd......there is sure to be a reason I can't do it.......there are so many things you aren't allowed to do

I have a site meeting with the water board next Friday (goodness I am scared...silly isn't it)

Well theres no doubt certain rules, restrictions etc, but your council can probably give you advice. You will still need to get a specialist asbestos removal company in, but if you are allowed to bury the asbestos instead of having to remove it then it will save a bundle

Struggling with the wall construction

either block, 2 inch cavity wall insulation, sud wall filled with insulation
or block,100mm cavity wall insulation, block & plasterboard

But someone was discussing Gyproc thermaline laminate - but I am not sure where I would use it or what it would replace

Any thoughts on over insulating?

Dont start anything without your local "building control officers" approval ,
ring your council they will give you all the right answers NEVER go ahead without it,lol

Oh don't worry I won't - however both BC & planning have said the more info I put in - the less they are going to find fault with

I am hoping for a site visit with planning in the near future (maybe this week?)

I speak to them regularily (not quite daily...but)

As they have already told you with regard to the end finish build ,daycare nursery they cannot THEN throw up objections etc after you have spent time /money on the project ...;)
hope you get everything sorted , ;)
