Fix the oil leak...

A torpedo type of bung that goes into the pipe then opens up like a wine stopper.

Huge elongated balloon, placed inside the fracture.
Then inflated at a fu*k off rate of knots..............
(like a car airbag).

Worry about welding the fracture later on......

Done job.......

This is probably not a DIY job... shouldn't perhaps have asked for a solution on here !!!!

the balloon is not a bad idea.. you'd have to insert it with a pipe so it's a long way in and then pump it full of a liquid cement or something..

what would the balloon be made out of... and how would it work at such low temperatures?

It's the depth of it that makes it hard to work on. Although you would have thought that appropriately manufactured concrete cowls could have been made and lowered over it, which could then be encased/weighted down with all that mud they're trying to cover it with.

It's only got to last 2 or 3 months to enable a bore hole nearby to be drilled to take the oil from there.

A balloon is a silly idea. Better some kind of Rawl Bolt that opens up.

How would you remove the rawl bolt after welding the repair...??????

At least the balloon could be deflated, after welding...........

I dont think the fractured pipe is the problem for BP. They are trying to block the flow from the well itself so they need to block that. The cant insert anything into the well because of the blowout preventor that sits on top of the well itself. They are going to try and inject the manifold on the blowout preventor with mud, clay, then eventually concrete.

Pretty difficult engineering task for them to be honest, lets hope this works

how will they remove the concrete they plan on pumping into it?

answer is you don't.. you cap the pipe, encase it is concrete and forget about it, then drill a new well..
