Glad you made it clear that you were refering to a small percentage of commercial companies and not slurring us all. As a regular in the CC, I think you'd agree that by reading the posts of the dozen or so guys that do commercial, none of us regularly flout the regs.

Theres nothing wrong with broadening my horizons. I find it silly that im able to weld 8" gas and install it, feeding a 1 megawatt setup but im not able,by law, to install an off the shelf combi boiler. The boilers I install come with commisioning packs usually I dont deal with that side of things but our company does have 1 commercial gas safe bloke on board if we need to purge and work on existing commercial systems.

I interpret that as meaning that you are not Gas Reg !

That means that you would probably NOT be able to take any short cuts to getting registered. That could mean long and expensive courses!

As suggested, spend a bit of time going out with a dom guy to see what he does and if you like it.

On a com gas course/assessment, I met this very clever RGI who specialised in fault finding on big gas and electrical installations. But he said to me that he could never contemplate going into peoples homes to do work there on carpets etc.

I always thought that good welders could earn very high pay in the oil pipeline fields?

Your correct about good welders earning very good money in power stations and fuel line setups but I'd rather not spend a lifetime in a job that I really dont enjoy. Youl never see an old welder with good eyes and the chances are most of them have had health issues due to a lifetime of welding.

I don't blame you for wanting to try something different. Anyone who has worked witth welders a lot will know that it's a dirty/sh:tty/noisy job. I've got tinitus, just by being around it and probably breathed in plenty of noxious fumes. Work near a bloke burning Nu 5's all day and you'll know about it.

Good luck to you mate, you should give the domestic game a go. You can always go back to welding if you don't like it.

Now get back on the fookin stick mate. Head down, arseup son!

Hah I'm not on the stick today. Finishing off a doc m the a bit of 355spiral to an ahu. I was planning on going for the full commercial gas too but speaking to our regular Mhs boilers engineer he advised that I go for domestic first to see how I liked it as the commercial side of commissioning was alot more involved. The way I see it is if my company are willing to pay il go for any courses that are offered to me. While I'm on the subject of courses has anyone fitted any air source heat pumps? I took the Mitsubishi ecodan course a while back but haven't really seen the results of the few I installed yet.

I would have thought that commercial first would be a more appropriate first step as its an environment you are familiar with.

It might also make for some easier entries too.

When I worked in the Middle East my wife worked for a diving company ( in the office ) where they did a lot of welding work underwater! The boss had a Chinese girlfriend in Canada and thought my wife would be a good reminder of her and he gave her very good salary etc.

My cousin is a submergable arc welder and he's on mega money but again there's lots of health implecations. He has a bupa health check once a month although he did inform me that people are usually led to believe that it shortens your life expectancy, gives you brittle bones ect which is not actually the truth. He's courses we're also I'm excess of 30k.

I remember working for a commercial guy when I first started
He took me to my first boiler it was massive can't remember the kw
Started thinking to myself what have I let myself in for

Second job was domestic some old boiler can't remember it that well
He turn around and said to me. "this is just a toy son" and started.laughing

God wish. That guy didn't retire. Would of loved to do commercial

Was only with him 2 weeks before he told me he was retiring
