header tank in attic is over flowing... the water in the tank is half way,
probably too much cause it expands when hot, whats the best way to get the header tank from having too much water in it

could also be a split coil in your immersion tank if you have one.
this would allow water to pass from the cold tank to the header tank which if lower would then overflow.

You mean the feed and expansion tank for the boiler?

Start with the easiest and cheapest job, by bailing out the water so the level is only a couple of inches above the exit near the bottom, then adjust the float arm so that the ball valve will not fill it above that height. Mark or measure the new water level carefully. Sit and watch the float valve to see if it is dripping (or put a jamjar or something under it so you will know). If so, measure it, and go and buy a new one of the same size (they only cost a few pounds and it will be quicker and easier than repairing the old one).

Observe the vent pipe bent over the top of the F&E. Is there any sign water has come out of it? You can tie a bit of tissue round the end to check

Now go and check the water level in the F&E. Has it risen again, and without any water dripping out of the float valve? If so, how old is your hot water cylinder, and what is the height of the cold water tank compared to the height of the F&E? Are you good at DIY plumbing?

This is about 2ft x 1ft x 1ft

Or do you mean the big one (perhaps a metre cube, or round, that feeds the bath taps? The big one is the cold water tank.

If you don't know, turn on a bath tap then go and look at the two tanks and see which one is being refilled.

also check the float at the end of the arm, if it feels heavy it could have water inside it, if it does you will need to change it
