Wondering what is the general lifespan of an open vented conventional hot water cylinder?

Depends on quality of the water where I live and mostly work copper cylinders without a anode fitted 10 years if your lucky.
Been using stainless cylinders for some time

Also seems to depend if it has thermostat pockets. They seem to go through in 10 years.

my new cylinder has one of those
I have just had my second tank go that way. I have made a temporary fix and plan to braze a plate over the pocket and use external contact to operate the thermistor. Checking the internet I found that this was a common issue.

Thanks for the replies. It's probably around 50yrs old, copper, no thermostat pockets (probably weren't used then!) Was originally gravity feed, converted to fully pumped around 20yrs ago.
