i have just found a junction box on the ring which is buried in the wall under the plaster. can anyone tell me if this is okay to leave or do i need to replace the whole cable run?

Ideally you should replace the cable, but if not possible then its possible that the joint could be remade by crimping or soldering within a suitable enclosure and re-burying, replacing the cable is by far the prefered option though
