Fair point! My excuse is I'm so poor I couldn't find a coin to hold up next to it.
So just to clarify, everyone: I have slightly larger than average adult male hands.
More likely to be for gas heaters than gas lighting, i would have thought. 1930's is far too late to have gaslighting.
I had a similar kind of thing sticking out of the upstairs floorboards in my 1960s ex council house. It was still connected to mains gas!
