thought i'd have a go at connecting new cooker to existing cooker fuse box. As a female i'm fed up with being ripped off by rouge traders and someone said its as easy as wiring a plug. B & Q sold me the correct grey cable but found one wire earth was unsheathed - didn't know you had to sheath it so connected it to cooker then tried to connect to existing box only to find the three screws were missing. Back at B & Q got a new box just to get the three screws that hold the cooker wire in the wall. Now ready to go and realised i have to sheath the bare earth wire. OK i'm not simple but if you've never done it, how are you meant to know - so please can someone give me basic instructions. I know insulation tape is inadaquate so will buy some suitable material. Absolute basic info really appreciated. Thanks

thanks Fred, off to b & q to get the sleeve no. assume it will fit with my 6 mm grey cable wires, but will take the packet jsut in case. Going to get a basic wire cutter too to trim the cable wire "properly". Found it hard to bend round the pins at the cooker outlet - guess i'm not that strong but thought maybe if i cut the wires to the right length it will help.

thanks again

ok so connection is now complete and cooker working.

When i tried to connect wire to cooker outlet three screws were missing. Final trip to B & Q to buy 6ml grab screws (think thats what they're known as). six different members of staff told me they don't supply them or make them any more!!! Decided at that point that fitting a new cooker outlet box was my next option so bought one. (The guy in the shop said "are you sure YOU should be doing this job?" um yes!!! Don't see why not. He reminded me to switch of the electric supply! OK i'm a female but i'm not stupid!!! Bet he wouldn't have said that to a burly builder type. Got the new cooker outlet box home only to find it came WITH 6ml grab screws after all, so just took them out of there and put them in the existing unit. JOB DONE. Thanks for the advice - you guys are fab!!!! Though honestly have to say i wouldn't have attempted it without reading other posts on here.
