Just looking for opinions on deck board staggering. This is 6.3 meters long by 1.9 wide. I'm using 3.6m boards, 120mm wide.

Is this staggering ok or will it look naff? I can use the offcuts .8m long elsewhere. Or should I be looking at more differing lengths of boards so the joins are more spread out? That's mean more double joists though.

450 centers
so 450-900-1350-1800-2250-2700-3150-3600-4050 -4500- 4950-5400-5850 -6300

so first length 00 to 3600 then 3600to 6.300 leaves 900
so 900 + 3600=4500 + 1800 leaves 1800

so not sure where your patern came from
i never double up on any joists because the joins are random

Thanks big-all. Sorry I should have included more info.

I've already used 400 centres, in my haste, without realising the impact it would have on how I cut the boards.

I should be more specific.

Exact measurements.
400mm oc joists
3620mm boards
deck frame 6370mm long

Are you saying you join boards over a 2 inch joist and it works ok without splitting? I've heard it should be a double joist.

you would need to double up every one as the joins are random

probably the easiest way is start the second row with half a board [2m ish]and alternate the offcuts so the joins are staggered a bit more

you can also look at working down one row then back up the next if it gives you a better spread

I like them completely random but 'thought about' if you get my drift. Uses up all the offcuts that way too.

Thanks both, that answers my question. I think I do prefer the look of more random spread joins and I think I'll make the effort.
