One of my past colleagues has seen my previous and called me for a well overdue catch-up.
He has also found the same problems as me on larger motors. His theory, and he stresses it is purely based on hunches, is that motors are being made more efficient to run and the fact that VSD drives etc. are now the norm means that DOL type starter problems that are apparently being created aren't catered for. Nothing to back the idea but it sounds plausable to me.
He reminded me of the motorised carbon pile resistors that we struggled to repair on a job and crazy motorised autotransformers which controlled the tourque of a winch.
