What is this type of fixture called? (photo included)

It's a fitting for a metal pipe, I have no idea what I should be searching for to find fittings like this - or even where I would be searching. It's not plumbing, just a generic fitting.

It doesn't have to be a two-piece fitting, just something along those lines which will grip a metal pipe, or ride on it.

Key clamps are a first class product, but aren't adjustable diameter wise (there's a few sizes though).
Perhaps you could investigate the available sizes before progressing further with your project?

But I've also seen fittings on guitar stands, where extensible tubes are gripped using screw/lever fastenings... like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stagg-SG50BK-Tripod-Guitar-Stand/dp/B003TFODL0

But I have never seen somewhere like B&Q sell metal pipework other than for plumbing, somewhere must stock such things but I don't know where to begin looking.

I actually want to make an adjustable version of something similar to the first link, but customised beyond what I can see online.
