Whirlpool washing machine "open door" LED indicati

My Whirlpool "6th Sense" washing machine will not work because it thinks that the door is open. I have made sure the door is shut but the "door open" LED is still ON.

Any ideas?

Door switch defective?
Is there a display on your machine? Whirlpool error codes will either appear in the display or manifest themselves by a repeated series of flashes on the start button LED (if your machine doesn't have a display).
