Ideal and Homeserve should be ashamed

A quick post as I'd arrived here via a Google search which flagged up the forum posts on how to fix an Ideal (Icos 3080) boiler (with an L8 fault code). Mine was fitted in the winter of 2002.

The advice I found in the threads is good, but a couple of points need highlighting/updating for anyone else arriving here with similar problems.

1) Homeserve no longer will quote for boiler repairs at all, let alone a fixed price - reneging on the promise they make on their website here
They do redirect the caller to the manufacturer servicing phone line (do they get a kickback for this?)

2) Ideal can't be bothered to repair a boiler more than 10 years old, demonstrating how much they care for their customers and their keenness to contribute to landfill.
So I told the phone line operative that I'd highlight the quality of their customer care on the internet.

Poor show all around.

I think that it is totally unreasonable for you to expect them to provide one off repairs to an 11 year old boiler.

Had you taken out an annual plan before the 10 year date was reached then they usually continue the cover.

Manufacturers only expect to provide spare parts support up to 10 years although some will do it for longer.

The obvious solution for you is to either call an independent engineer or replace the boiler with a new one.

The forum rules dont allow people to come here just to express their gripes!

I think you've missed much of the point of my post.

Whether I had an annual plan with Homeserve is not the point.
I gleaned the advice about Homeserve quoting fixed prices for specific boiler repairs (without a service plan) from a (perfectly reasonable) thread on this forum.
The Homeserve current website (linked in the post) backs that up.

But that is now misleading, and that is now an option that doesn't exist.
Not just for my boiler, but for any boiler, nomatter what age/make.
Despite what they say on their current website.

As for Ideal, I feel it is similar to having a car with a problem, taking it to the manufacturer garage, and have them say they won't even consider a repair.
Folk considering boiler purchases may welcome knowing that.

There is much more in the post than just a gripe.

I've got to go now & try & see if I can see what the problem with the fan is.

I have never heard of Homeserve doing one off repairs anyway. I just see them as providing on going insurance like cover.

Neither Ideal, British Gas or Homeserve want to get involved with boilers over 10 years old unless they have been on annual cover before they reached 10 years of age.

A DIYer should not be opening the combustion area and touching a boiler fan.

Good of you to try to help Amy.

However, I dont think that he has any policy with Homeserve.

Seems he just wanted a one off boiler repair which he says is offered on your web site but not available if you call!

Tony

Has your boiler been serviced properly every year?
As I am fed up being called out to 11 year old m30s that are falling to bits or had a "mate" looking after them.
Only to find that the hex is gubbed due to never being cleaned, the Cex is burst due to never being checked and pumped up etc etc etc.
If I am called to these now in that state I refuse to fix and contact business support as its beyond economical repair.
Probably hex burnt through and taken out fan harness, or fan gubbed due to condense in combustion chamber.
Tbh I don't really care.
Edit these are my own personal views and not those of management :D

Tony the expect EVERYTHING to be replaced for a one off repair.
I went to one of my guys jobs last week. Hex was leaking, Cex was burst, pcb was water damaged as was pump, diverter was seized, plate was leaking. The engineer had stupidly ordered all this instead of informing business support it was beyond economical repair. Ps it was a 12 year old M30100 in. Landlords property and the boiler was hinging like a pun o mince!!!!
I had to do it 3, bloody hours boiler off wall the lot.
We lost money on that job!

Would this be the Homeserve who are contacting my clients via information recieved from boiler manufactures warranty forms? , had a client last week who recieved a letter from homeserve suggesting they carry out the first year annual service to the boiler I installed 11 months ago.

Absolute disgrace , could you shed some light on this please Amy? , I am in reciept of the two letters from homeserve that the client kindly gave me , should I post the contents on here?

Loathe that I am to support either Ideal or Homeserve - I can't see what the OP is whining about.

Their underhand dealings with regard poaching customers is more of a worry to my mind.

Bet we don't get any more info out of them.

Mind you - an Icos lasting 11 years has to be a record.

Ha ha ha, "here to help", that is really funny.
I specialise in boiler repairs, and I've been called out to more boilers from people that were let down by Homeserve than I can remember.
The quality of some of their "engineers" is atrocious, and their integrity non-existent.
People pay a monthly premium for cover but when they need it, they get fools and conmen.
Standard spiel seems to be "you need a powerflush" at £stupid money, or "boiler can't be repaired".
More often than not it turns out to be a really simple problem e.g. pump, flowswitch, pressure switch.

No surprise coming from a company that made national headlines for misleading sales calls or something like that.

Homeserve you act like your sh£it dont stink. Your lot have brought more tears to human beings than Adolf Hitler could manage!
