turn water supply off cut pipe off from supply fit "plug" to pipe, (probably stop end) remove tank ?

The cold mains has to be disconnected where it joins the mains, you cannot leave a long dead pipe connected to the supply as allsorts of nasties will breed. (see water regs)

i thought that was the case, thats why i said fit plug to pipe, but i see it could mean fit plug to pipe at the end of the pipe where the tank was, so creating "dead leg"
