Sime Super 90 - Vibrates and hums

Hello all, a plea for help. Before I hand over my wallet to an engineer as he sucks the air in through his teeth shaking his head. Can I ask you some of you wise and skilled men and women to impart your sacred knowledge upon me? Or even tell me the fault if you’re particularly up for a challenge.

Q. Sime Super Plus, combi boiler. Works fine most of the time but on odd occasions and its getting more frequent especially on timer, it will make awful... I can’t quite describe: Buzzing/humming, ‘BVVVVVVVV’ sound which comes from the boiler it’s self and vibrates through the pipes and flooring. At 3 in the morning it sounds just like someone’s got a masonry drill and is boring through the wall. I am not sure if the water is still pumping hot as the sounds is so bad I turn it off, for mine as well as the neighbours sake. I guess you might even say it sounds as if water pump is pumping dry. But it does it randomly, even when no taps or washing machine is on.

Any advice or help would be truly appreciated, more so I can get an idea when Dick Terpin gives me his invoiced ultimatum. Thanks all for your time and understanding. John.

check the pressure gauge, should be reading about 1 - 1.5 bar when cold

Your stereotype of boiler engineers is probably rather wide of the mark. I do have to say than none I have met at ARGI would fit that description!

As for your boiler fault is concerned I have encountered a sudden attack of amnesia!

I might need to be reminded by being in front of it!

Agile, you are quite right *holds out his hand for a slap* and probably not the best way to go about asking either. It was meant tongue in cheek and dare I say from previous personal experience, which could be said was my own fault in choice of engineer. I apologise. While I know I will have to bite the bullet and call one in, a little understanding or sought after knowledge can go a long way.

As for pressure, the gauge reads .5 bar when hot on central heating. The temp gauge doesn’t read anything which is a fault in its self. It doesn’t trip the overheat switch and both tap and heating temp selectors work allowing the temp to be modified. Both of which are set to their mediums.

Well for a start repressurise the boiler to 1.5 Bar cold.

What would your boiler be doing at 0300 hrs apart from sleeping?

after filling up the beastie, you could fiddle with the outer case as it may be simply rattling, or it could be the fan starting to get noisey.
