ground source heat pump

wiring a house out and the customer is installing the above, he had no info on the electrical supply apart from it needs a "thick cable" "something that carries 50-60 amp".

I imagine the starting load will be large and that a type c breaker may be in order.

I am supplying the GSHP in SWA in a channel cut into the kitchen floor, the cable run is approx 8 metres. Im going to install a 16mm cable to be safe.

Has anyone any experience or advice relating to GSHP's?

Ask for the actual specifications and installation instructions, and/or the product details so you can talk to the manufacturer.

50-60A seems huge - are you sure the customer isn't working that out from the output figure of the pump?

I have been looking at air source heat pumps for my own house. Most of the manufacturers are the same and most of them have installation manuals on their web sites. For the ASHPs, those that are specific say that you should use a type D MCB.

I wouldn't install a type D breaker in a domestic or similr situation, it'd be very hard to keep Zs in spec!, a BS88 fuse would be much more sensible

I'm not an electrician, I'm just going on what the manual says. Can you explain a bit more? I'm not going to be doing the installation of my heat pump but I would like to understand what choices the electrican is going to have.

I think the last one I did was a 40amp type d with a 6mm. Not 100% to be honest.
I think you'd be safe with a 10mm.

Off the top of my head I don't think a D40 will go with 6mm² regarding disconn. time
