afternoon!
I am in the process of buying a new bunglow with a large extention that has a flat roof. we are going to be doing some major work to it and as i have an aversion to flat roofs im interested in finding out about getting the flat roof piched a bit and then getting it coverd in zinc.
I was just wondering if any one on here has worked with metal roofs on residential propertys and any opinions on the matter ie costs

If i was fitting any type of metal roof it would have to be lead then after that copper but lead is the best metal roof covering imo.

Well I did copper and zinc @ college and lead there and after- I see nowt wrong with copper, apart from the time it takes to go from orange to that lovely patinated green .Zinc is the same principle but a bit dull, in my opinion I`m in Sussex, and I haven`t seen many copper roofs admitedly - lead is more popular . If you travel the A22 - stop off near Uckfield and have a look @ Mr. Hoogstraten`s copper dome ;)

thanks Nige F
I take it your a roofer then, do you know how the prices varies between the 3 metals?where abouts in sussex are you, im down in worthing.

Plumber , but we did lead and other sheet metals - like I said only @ college with the sheet- carried on with the lead on occasion . You`ll need to search locally for specialised sheet metal roofers . Though there are skilled /experienced guys on here . The Roofing game is a minefield  from a customer`s point of view. Been retired a while so no idea of prices  . East Sussex council runs a www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk maybe W. Sussex does too . You`ll need structural calcs - competent carpenter - specialised roofer - . (There is a plasterer in the family , send me a personal message if that info is of use later in your project ;) )

As mentioned, lead and copper are better, but don't expect your roof to still be there when you come back from holiday.

Tip for turning your copper green very quickly, pee on it cough cough ;) Never actually tried it bit apparantly its true.

 wouldn`t try that on Mr. H`s mansion though

Nothing wrong with zinc whatsoever, not quite sure why zinc is lacking popularity on the forum (lack of experience maybe?). Its cheaper than copper or lead and will last well, certainly out-living any Forum members. Its a standing seam roof that easily has the same or better performance in terms of reliability than other metal roofing materials and a lifespan of around 60+ years.

the reason i chose zinc is that i guesed it would be cheaper than lead and copper, i also think it looks quite modern

The VMZINC website is the industry standard for detailing if you want to see how it goes together, I've got some details somewhere myself too if you're interested.

I've fitted zinc to 14 residential properties this year!! It's the most popular material for domestic use due to cost, but that said copper would be cheaper than lead by a mile unless you wanted green copper which is very expensive.
Zinc is probably the most modern of products and has come a long way in the past 10 years. It is available in a number of colours and I recently replaced a zinc roof on a church which lasted 124 years!!
Please get in touch if you would like a free quotation. :D

Many roof cleaning companies will offer to install zinc strips on your roof for a hefty price tag. A professional company can remove the moss without damaging the roof. And one thing a person should always keep in mind is NEVER allow someone pressure wash your composite (shingles) roof.
