How heavy is a 4800 x 250 x 75 C16 timber beam?

"Sources" suggest the density of C16 is ~370Kg/m3

The cubic metreage of the 4800 x 250 x 75 beam is 0.090m3

"Therefore" the beam should have a mass of 370 * 0.09 = 33.3Kg

.... yet my timber supplier reckons it's too heavy to lift.

Where am I going wrong?

Limit of 25kg on site these days isn't it?

Although a man each end and while you might really be straining, I reckon you might just about manage it

Failing that maybe you could hire a Genie lift from your local hire centre to help you lift it into place

My local timber-mill works on 900 kg/m3 for green spruce and 600 kg/m3 when air-dried, so i reckon 50- 60 kg.

Ah-ha!

That would fit more with the experience of a mate who reckoned such a beam would indeed be (proper) heavy.

Those are interesting figures as they deviate vastly from the C16 data I have seen in at least two places. And that is odd because timber people are fond of saying density is a reasonable proxy for strength. Are we somehow now growing heavier yet weaker timber???

So many questions ...

Anyhow, thanks v much for the input. I'm coming around to using those (ghastly?) I-joist thingamies. Having said that, I've yet to see any references as to their use for my particular purposes (as binders shoring up a 4.5mx4.5m roof joisted with stringy 4"x2").

Thanks again.

two of you will lift that easily
Most general softwoods would be between 450 and 600kg per cubic metre
