I was trying to replace the cord by just removing the old cord and tying the new cord near the top but the whole cord has come away from the fitting. Anyway I just thought I'd have to remove the ceiling part and do it properly, problem is there are no screws so I'm not sure how it should come off??

Can anyone and advise me how it should come away? Help! or the light is going to have to be on for a long time!

Do you mean a pull-switch cord? If so, try turning anti-clockwise. Otherwise I don't know.

If you do this - turn off at the consumer unit first!

Given that you are going to be replacing it anyway there is always the option of simply smashing it with a hammer if you can't figure out how to get it open.

Er... Too much wine? We're talking about replacing a piece of string unless I'm misunderstanding?

Sometimes age and/or paint can make them difficult to unscrew. A gentle tap can sometimes free them up.

Remember safe isolation !
