hi i have 02 polo 1.2 which now wont start was fine up until went to start this morning turned over but wouldnt fire up epc light and battery light have come on so tried a boost starter and it just sounded like the exhaust manifold had come off (i did check its still on) have been told it could be slipped timing but was fine day before was just on starting. any help on this would be very gratefull although not a mechanic good with my hands so if this is a problem i could fix myself any ideas to try are welcome.

yeah oil is pretty dirty and needs changing pain is was 2 weeks from getting full service just checking a few other threads app oil linked to timing chsin tensioner on my model so may have jumped or stretched the chain. sounds painfully expensive
A collapsed cat in the exhaust can stop it from starting, though, unlikely overnight, have you done basic checks, such as fuel, sparking etc?.

if the eml is on it would benefit you to get the fault codes read, this will probably point you in the right direction
The proper way is to connect a pressure guage to the upstream lamda port and check for excessive back pressure in the exhaust. You can tap the casing with a rubber malltet, if it sounds like a bag of spanners it has collapsed. I doubt this is your problem though.
The oil dampened tensioner was only fitted as a replacement item in instances of increased timing chain noise. The standard timing chain on your enigne is tensioned by a spring loaded tensioner, it is possible this has sheared and the chain has become loose, upsetting the timing. You need specialist tools to check and reset the timing so not easy to do at home - unless you want to buy the gear.
As ch427 said I think your best bet is to get the fault codes read. The EPC light on VAG cars usual relates to the drive by wire throttle system only and there is a seperate light for engine management faults but I think on certain models the EPC light is also the MIL light.
its going to the garage once the mech gets back from his vegas holiday. just been checking all connectors again in case i missed any before although gave it another go starting and after sounding like a wet fart for a few seconds started to turn over properly again just not firing up
Your mechanic holidays in Vegas? I think you pay him too much!
