We're doing a DIY kitchen remodel and are wondering what can be done with the fake tile pattern etched into our wall. At this point I would say we are better than novice DIYers but not looking to get into something we can't get right.
Any ideas?

is that in the plaster? or tiles that are painted?

if plaster you could easi fill and sand it flat perhaps.

I believe it's regular plaster board from the 1940-50's. The pattern runs behind the cabinets and everything so I assume it was purchased with the pattern already on it.

The grooves are only about 1/16 of an inch deep.

are you sure that that fist picture of the yellow wall is not some kind of board with a tile pattern on it or actual tiles? it dont look like render or plaster to me the squares are to precise to be any sort of ashlar,if you think its plaster try scraping or chipping part of a tile off and see what happens

Areas will chip away like dust. Don't know enough to know exactly what it is. Can a regular drywall skimcoat be used?
