Leaky flat roof - quotes

Sorry if this is a stupid question. how would I know a good felt roofer that would build a roof that lasts for 20 years? Are there any questions I should ask?

Yes, previous work is a good start. Here's some of mine...

All installed using premium felts by a licensed installer (Part of the insurance criteria)

Brent Cross being 50000m2 taking 3 years. There are roofers, and there are people who do a bit of roofing...

Very impressive! Although as a non expert, I cant tell the difference between a roof that lasts 10 or 20 years.

Well, the easiest way to look at it is thus, do you think Brent Cross for instance would spend 3.2 million on something that was substandard especially after their previous roof had failed so soon? The copper faced felt (Veral) is £375 a roll (8m2) usually used in vertical apps, you don't pay that for a 5 minute longevity. You also don't let an idiot with a gas gun near it..

3.2 million... I'd have done it for 2.9. I think your a bit expensive....

Xenon - what's the lifespan on copper covered felt? How is it joined? Didn't know it existed, I guess that's me out of a job!

And the cost at £375 for 8m2, how does that compare to copper sheet?

It's a shame all the hand crafted work passed down for 100's of years is lost on a bell tower with torch on felt but money talks........

Its a torch on with torched lap, has a protective tape to stop the copper lifting. Very difficult to fix. I agree it would be a better job in copper. (We have some fantastic Craftsmen who do ours) but this was copper veral before we replaced it due to rotten timbers. The pudding roof was covered in Nuralite before. We've just had some Cupolas done in copper, but in the warehouse then craned onto a school.

As to lifespan, manufacturer gives 30 years, but i've never heard of it failing. Also comes in stainless or aluminium too.

The biggest threat to copper is single ply, they actually make a copper or verdigris finish now and even do the ribs, from the ground, the untrained eye cannot tell the difference.

I think hard metals will win through in the end. Anything that uses a lot of oil to produce a product is only going to go up in price, metal is a relative low carbon product and is 80% recycled material. You can imitate but you can't replicate..........

Agreed, have very few copper specs coming through though, as well as lead/zinc.

We're doing a big copper strip in Southampton at the minute, and they're putting Decra back (Britmet)

Got another big copper strip in the new year, and thats going back in the copper veral due to theft issues.

We're pricing Bletchley Park at the minute which is listed, so if they do go ahead with main house areas, there's some lovely copper on there.
