While replacing windows in some dormer roofs for a customer I have discovered there are no lead soakers fitted, just roofing felt run around onto the dormer cheeks.
Construction is pitched roof, Kent peg tiles on battens and felt. Side of dormers are chipboard (all rotted away) with expanded metal attached and rendered over.
The old roof felt has degraded where it returns around onto the dormer sides and allowed water to soak behind the rendered cheeks into the chipboard. This has now all been replaced and the cheeks are now external ply.
The roof has very steep pitch, and as the windows are not tall the side cheeks are small with a return of only 250mm at the top, so instead of re-rendering I intend to use lead. I have installed traditional soakers many times before but so far always abutting brick where I have pugged them into the mortar joints.

So, how do I attach the soakers to the ply side cheeks of a dormer when that also is covered in lead.

I am guessing that first I simply tack the return of each soaker to the ply, working from bottom to top as I work up through the tile rows, and then i fit the triangular lead to the dormer cheek which will cover these soakers.
I will tack a lead strip under soffit of dormer to fold back over top edge of side cheek lead to hold it back, return side cheek lead around face of dormer and cover it with timber cheek.
But how do I finish/hold back the triangular side lead where it runs up the pitch line of the tiles over the soakers?
Or am I completely on the wrong track?
Thanks Steve.
PS, I would have a roofer do it, but I cant get anyone next week that's interested, and as I have a job in progress I have got to do it myself.
And I just read another thread about leading on dormers and the issue about HSE was raised. This job is all scaffolded out and PL insured.

I am assuming the lead running up the sides are fixed at the top, and you need to fix bottom of lead where it overlaps the soakers.
You can either fit some lead straps to the timber cheeks, just above top of soakers, long enough that when lead is dressed to the cheeks you can fold the straps over the bottom.
Another option is use, Lead Dots, basicly round lead dome that screws down.
If you google Lead Dots, you can also get more intricate and decorative fixings.

Thanks. I will fix the side hanging side cheek lead at the top, which will be concealed under a lead strip that I shall fold back over. I shall install a couple of straps at the bottom to hold it back and it will be fixed all the way up the front where I fold it over the vertical front of the dormers timber stud.
My issue was, holding back the lead sides where it runs up over the soakers and the edge of the tiles.
But I have just looked at the website Nige F suggested which has helped greatly. I think!!!! I shall first fix my side cheeks with a continuous welt up the abutment with the sloping roof, then hang my soakers over the battens with the return lipped into the the welt of the sides cheek lead.

Have a look @ www.leadroof.org.uk dormer cheeks and other info there  click on technical then LSA pocket guide
Thanks Nige. I looked at the site and it helped greatly. If you look at my reply to Cotswoldbuilder you will see my planned attack, If you think I have got it wrong please say, thanks again, Steve.

Steve. pictures would help people help you. I am not sure exactly what you are asking but the soakers can be bent round the top of the baton to hold them in place.

The welt will stiffen the lead - that`s fine - but the soakers only need to lay against the timber cheek under the lead covering . I` m with the lead dots to hold the bottom of the sheet . ;)

Thanks catlad but fitting the soakers is not a problem it was how to abut soakers around onto a lead sheet hanging down the dormer side.
But I think I have it all sorted now. Cheers.

Brilliant, thanks Nige, I am happy to get on and do it now. Although today we found all of the rafters and wall plate rotten between the dormers because having no soakers has allowed water ingress between roof tile and cheeks on all windows. More work for me, but more unexpected outlay for customer. I hate having to put in additional invoices.
Thanks for your help.
