Need to do a small patch up job on some pebbledash that's blown. Question is how do I get the spar on the new render? Do I need a Harling trowel or is there some cheap gizmo I could knock up? Don't really have use for a Harling trowel. The patch job is approx 4m2.

You could use the back of your trowel for a small area .

I make mine from bit of metal bent into L shape, with bit of wood for a handle. A piece of shovel handle is ideal, but you can shape a bit of 2x2 - you can notch the wood so it the metal sits into it. But for 4 m2, doesn't have to be too well made, a couple of screws will do you
