Is this safe? Could be MDF?

Hi

I have a electric fireplace surround. It was in my home when I bought it and moved it to the garage where it sat against the wall. It got damp (I guess) and expanded and split in one corner.

I still use the electric heater in the winter as the garage is now my gym.

Is that safe? Or should I cut if off and seal it up? Heard that MDF is not healthy.

Is that safe?
Yes
Or should I cut if off and seal it up?
No, that is when it can become hazardous.

Certain types of MDF can be dangerous to your health, deepening on the materials used in it's manufacture. It's the dust that causes the hazard and this hazard occurs when the material is being machined, normally in timber yards and woodworking shops.

When I moved it I did get the fluff stuff on my shirt.

I may wrap some tape around it just to seal it up

Inhaling the dust during machining is when it becomes unsafe. You're using complete overkill and panic about this.

Believe me, I am not panicking, just asking!

Tip? It is a vital part of my garage - provides heat and acts as a wall between the gym and the tool storage area.

you are under no danger i suspect if you are exposed to 1000 times more particles off mdf you may approach the risk when near to heavy traffic
in the same way that smoking 1 cigaret will not give you cancer

I moved into a house where the previous tenant was a bit of a bodge job man. He made some fitted wardrobes with MDF, but only painted the front of this wardrobe.
