We all love a bit of discrimination, so as a result of the cliche hedge-trimmer-cut-through-flex accident that befell me last weekend, which device or devices operated?

Flex was two-core.

In order from appliance:
1. Appliance plug 5 A fuse
2. 13 A fuse in switched FCU for outside socket
3. 20 A MCB
4. 80 A / 30 mA RCD
5. DNO fuse

Winner gets to feel briefly smug.

My guess is 3.

4 probably wouldnt have tripped as it was a direct short between live and neutral.

MCB probably acts quicker than the two wire fuses in a dead short situation.

I don't know, but in my wire-cutters-through-T&E the other week the only thing that blew were the wirecutters.

1 & 3 & 4

Cut lead fell to the ground and caused an imbalance to earth when landed in a puddle.... :)

I'll give it another 15 mins. And to add to the excitement, the winner will get a dedicated favourite quote from b-a-s.

Well, I did a similar thing with a lawnmower years ago.'82 I think.

The 1362 definitely did not pop and neither did the RCD. Until I picked up the lead end (silly sod).......

The breaker will fail in preference to the 13A 1362, so I reckon it's down to either the breaker or the DNO's fuse.

Now, if the DNO's fuse is a 3036, then the breaker will pop first.

But if the DNO fuse is an 88/3 or weak, who knows?

I'll go with the DNO fuse.

When I did it (identically, with a Class II hedge cutter) two or three years ago, the fuse in the plug and the local 20A MCB did not operate, but the 60A 1361 fuse protecting the sub-main concerned popped! (and the RCD did not operate)

Kind Regards, John

Well Iggifier is the winner with:
1. (5A plug fuse); and
3. 20 A MCB

And the pearl of b-a-s's wisdom is:

"They are useless at lighting up any room, because, more than just not being designed to do that, they are actively, positively designed to not do it."
