Re-positioning downlights - a how to -some advice please!

Hi,

I've got a few downlights in some odd positions and would like them moved. But, they only need to be moved a few inches, so I am hoping that there is sufficient wire for that.

So...I'm thinking about doing it myself.

I'm just wondering if there are any tips you have for covering the old hole. Using the piece of plasterboard I would have cut for the new hole, how do I fix it in place in the old hole? I doubt it can be screwed in place, as there would be nothing to screw into.

Any other considerations would be appreciated.

I would insert a length of 2x1" timber about twice as long as the hole, and screw through the ceiling either side of the hole into the timber using plasterboard screws.

Then insert the piece of plasterboard you removed for fitting the light in the new position, with glue on the back, and put a plasterboard screw through the middle.

Once its dried, use a bit of multi-finish plaster to fill the small gap around the new board you fitted, and then a thin skim over the top. Then sand and fill until its completely hidden.

(It doesn't take as long as it sounds, I have just done this)

A good tip when you drill the new holes, is to paint the fresh cut with a 50/50 mix of PVA and water. Stops a shower of dust if you need to take the lights out.

Before you drill the new holes, take the downlighters out and have a feel around to make sure there are no joists or other obstacles where you plan to drill, otherwise you'll get a new hole you can't use .... in fact the presence of joists might explain why the lights are in slightly odd positions
