wb 24i rsf combi. Wont light unless heated up by fanheater

Nearly made my missus cry today (again). What the hell is wrong with it?
Told her I'd get it sorted but may take a while. She aint happy lol.

Always plays up when it's cold but today being warmer, ok milder. She tried to light it for bout half hour without the fan. Only way to fire it up is by running hot tap first, then it sparks up and a mini flame occurs then a few seconds later it fires up proper. Then flick heater control knob on, turn tap off bingo.

Used to have to keep doin that for ages before it catches then tried putting a fanny heater (spelt with a h). on it for five mins, its in a cupboard aswell.

So it's heat related, wtf is wong with it?

How long has this been going on for?

How did you figure out warming the boiler with a a fan convector? I can't see anyway this has any effect on it btw

Have you had a htg engineer out to look at it?

Don't know why it works but it does.

I had a relay replaced on pcb recently that was showing signs of malfunctioning ie sooted up. But can't say it made much difference as still wouldn't flame up as it should.

Next thing to try is replace pcb for a reconditioned one and see if that sorts it.

Hmmm..Was hoping for some insight but guess it's got everyone baffled.

I think everyone is baffled by your reluctance to call a boiler engineer out to it

I will do, just would like to know beforehand what is likely to be wrong with it,
and trying to avoid a boiler fella telling me it's prob the gas valve or whatever
then finding out it wasn't. Just haven't got the money to throw away.

It sounds like the kind of fault that needs someone there to diagnose I'm afraid. Nobody had money to throw away, but remember that you're employing whoever you call in to fix your boiler. If they change a part and it doesn't fix the boiler, you don't need to pay them, as they haven't done what you've employed them to do.

But replacing parts without a proper diagnosis is likely to end up more expensive in the long run.

Without being at the boiler I have no idea what is wrong but it could well be a small adjustment which does not need any parts.

Your reluctance to call an engineer implies to me that you have not had it serviced regularly either!

The boiler had full yearly service history till I took over. There was a plumber guy I knew who used to give it a quick brush and hoover out for a pint or two. He always said it was in good nick and hardly any soot in combustion chamber, nice deep blue flame etc.
In all honesty from what Ive seen and heard this is about all a service entails mostly. I know this will rile a few H/E's up and I apologise to those that do more than this but we've all heard about the cowboys that rip off customers
replacing perfectly good serviceable parts unnecessarily.

Seems like you have already done this yourself and that you are planning to replace the whole PCB next as that did not solve the problem!

Ha, there's no flies on you Tony. As I said the relay was indeed faulty. Unfortunately replacing it didn't rectify the other fault.

Have you ever read/checked the carbon monoxide levels with all the gas and oven jets on full bore?
