Well first off I have used this site for many years and having recently took the plunge and moved to a pellet boiler I thought I would share my experience here. Having checked online there are not huge amounts of info regarding pellet boilers so here is my 2 pence worth.
History;
Large 5 bed house in North Wales using LPG (no mains gas) via a 15+ year old Worcester combi boiler which was burning approx £2300 per year plus to heat the house for 2-3 hours in AM and 4 hours in PM. All upper rooms and old part of house are radiators ground floor in new build is wet UFH
£ Wood burning stoves are in the house and they help to keep us warm but the cost of the LPG was never going to go down.
House is I would say of medium insulation being half stone and half new build with a lot of modification in the older part to give better insulation but not totally renovated in the old part of the house still.
Scope;
Since we extended the house we knew we needed a new boiler but managed for the past 15 months using a Worcester 35cdi that struggled to heat the house (I got quotes for new systems including pellet boilers and most were in the region of £5K with the pellet boilers being in the £15k plus region) . I wanted something that was going to give us enough heat but also something I can monitor use so the pellet boiler seemed the best idea for us.
Budget was tight as the work to the house is still on going.
I don't want to say I was in it to save the environment etc but that was also part of my decision to go with pellet boilers. I am not a eco warrior but I do understand we need to save our planet.
Companies;
Had quotes prior to the extension for mostly pellet boilers and LPG/Oil boilers as it was deemed that ground source and air source heating would not work in my half and half house very efficiently.
What I ended up with;
Well back in January 2016 I saw an advert on facebook for a free pellet boiler and it went from there I wont give out company names but we ended up having it all fitted two weeks back for free.
The system consists of,
15kw Trianco pellet boiler
500L Thermal Store
2 x backup Immersion heaters
all pipework and electrical work
Work was completed in two days by three men.
So far we have a lot more heat than ever before (most probably down to the size of the boiler being better for our property) the house just feels generally warmer which pleases the wife.
I am monitoring pellet use and to start with the heating was set up on timer for to long which is now set about right for us. So the past week I would say is a good indicator of our winter use.
It has snowed a few times has been wet and windy which I would class as a average winter week in Wales, we have burnt 185.3kg in the past 7 days so about 27kg per day.
Time will tell how it all pans out and I will keep this updated periodically.
