Well first off I have used this site for many years and having recently took the plunge and moved to a pellet boiler I thought I would share my experience here. Having checked online there are not huge amounts of info regarding pellet boilers so here is my 2 pence worth.

History;
Large 5 bed house in North Wales using LPG (no mains gas) via a 15+ year old Worcester combi boiler which was burning approx £2300 per year plus to heat the house for 2-3 hours in AM and 4 hours in PM. All upper rooms and old part of house are radiators ground floor in new build is wet UFH
£ Wood burning stoves are in the house and they help to keep us warm but the cost of the LPG was never going to go down.
House is I would say of medium insulation being half stone and half new build with a lot of modification in the older part to give better insulation but not totally renovated in the old part of the house still.

Scope;
Since we extended the house we knew we needed a new boiler but managed for the past 15 months using a Worcester 35cdi that struggled to heat the house (I got quotes for new systems including pellet boilers and most were in the region of £5K with the pellet boilers being in the £15k plus region) . I wanted something that was going to give us enough heat but also something I can monitor use so the pellet boiler seemed the best idea for us.

Budget was tight as the work to the house is still on going.

I don't want to say I was in it to save the environment etc but that was also part of my decision to go with pellet boilers. I am not a eco warrior but I do understand we need to save our planet.

Companies;
Had quotes prior to the extension for mostly pellet boilers and LPG/Oil boilers as it was deemed that ground source and air source heating would not work in my half and half house very efficiently.

What I ended up with;

Well back in January 2016 I saw an advert on facebook for a free pellet boiler and it went from there I wont give out company names but we ended up having it all fitted two weeks back for free.
The system consists of,

15kw Trianco pellet boiler
500L Thermal Store
2 x backup Immersion heaters
all pipework and electrical work

Work was completed in two days by three men.

So far we have a lot more heat than ever before (most probably down to the size of the boiler being better for our property) the house just feels generally warmer which pleases the wife.

I am monitoring pellet use and to start with the heating was set up on timer for to long which is now set about right for us. So the past week I would say is a good indicator of our winter use.
It has snowed a few times has been wet and windy which I would class as a average winter week in Wales, we have burnt 185.3kg in the past 7 days so about 27kg per day.

Time will tell how it all pans out and I will keep this updated periodically.

A Picture of my Boiler last week, I will get some more close up shots tomorrow showing inside and the controls.

Its a Little wet and wild here in Wales today but I managed to get a few more snaps of it.

Left side holds the burner and ash pan, also the controller can be found here.

The hopper takes up the right side and holds about 15 bags approx.The Electrics control board is also this side (not pictured)

Hi drpepe what sort of info do you need?

I can't comment on cost to run as of yet other than to say it seems to be working out cheaper than my LPG was but we are only 16 days in.

What do you need to know about installation?

Just a quick update, as with the weather improving maybe not so much but still its getting warmer the consumption has gone down. Last week was the least burnt so far at just 110KG, my heating is still on set at 18 on the stat which keeps our system in at the right temps around the house.

Couple of little issues - the boiler whistles a little at some points in its cycle and it also has an air lock which I am awaiting the engineers to come out and resolve the banging pipes.

So far so good and their response to the small issues will show me if they are a good firm.

Just a update, nearly 2 years on boiler going strong still and I can highly recommend one our heating cost is still about half of what it was on LPG.

The past 3 months have been challenging with the European pellet shortage but I have made it through even if it cost me a few hundred pounds more. I dont have the storage for mre than 2 tons and always fear its a risk to keep any more than that due to potential water damage.

Anyway all is well so far I have had a desk audit from RHI and also a on-site audit from RHI so hopefully I wont hear from them again for the next 5 years.

How much a tonne are the pellets? We burn anthracite and 100 kg comes to £32 which lasts a week.

Hi Phil, a 975kg pallet of pellets can be anywhere between £200 and £350 depending on where and when you buy them, I personally budget approx £260 per pallet delivered. I use bagged pellets but you can get them cheaper if you have a blown delivery when you have a big hopper.

I'm in the market for a pellet boiler as we currently rely on old storage heaters (which are terrible) and there's no gas supply in our village.

What's the catch with having this installed for free? I've struggled to find anything at less than £10k so far.

No catch with the company I used all above board and explained what I was signing up for. They take all of the RHI payment so it covers their cost to install and you get a system installed for free. The only cost is the annual maintenance which is done via their company but this keeps it in warranty for the 7 year period so a fair deal I feel.

The downside if you can call it that would be that in the 7 years of RHI payments if you wanted to sell it may possibly put a buyer off (unlikely when you explain how much cheaper to run it is) and that they would need to take ownership of the RHI scheme payments with the company moving it from your name to theirs.

Very interesting. Do you mind me asking the name of the company? Was it just the boiler which they installed - or did it include all thermal store, radiators etc?

They are called Fusion Energy, they did everything but the radiators for me BUT that's as I already had them. At the time they would fit the whole system if you didn't have one but I cant tell you what they do now sorry.

I have just posted it on your profile hope you can see it ok. Not sure I can share links on here for that sort of thing
