Just some observations ........ the young boy maybe 7 or 8 had a galaxy S6 that he was playing with exactly the same as mine...... that surprised me.

(Mother had a galaxy note.)

A cabinet maybe 2 foot long 18 inches high full of medication.

Through sign language she asked me to speak to her husband on the phone ........very loud raucous typical noisey pub background many people there , I don't suppose I expected that at 11.30 in the morning !

One of the crowd there said I'll translate.......

I suppose I expected a quiet shellshocked family situation not someone having a high old time in what sounded like a pub with the shouting and laughing........I know what a noisey pub sounds like.

What was the father's job or profession?

When did the family leave Syria?

And you say they weren't refugees, right?

Just in case it's not clear the council official told me they were asylum seekers from Syria.

I wouldn't have known otherwise as we couldn't converse......I think the sound of the father having a high old time with the wife and two children at home surprised me somewhat.....obviously a lot of people here he knows.

Well, if we don't know why they fled, we won't be able to guess if there's anything unusual. I suppose a brain surgeon or an oil engineer or a plumber can have a mobile phone, whatever country they're in, and might find it easier to carry away than a grand piano or an oil painting.

Some people think that refugees shouldn't have mobile phones, but they need not be any different from you or me.

Here's a girl in Surrey

One of the most blatantly racist posts I've ever encountered, even for this site!
Shame on you gasbag.
It's just as well we all know you're a lying little bag of flatulence.

Many people who are learning English find having a smartphone very useful. They can use Google translate and speech synthesis.

And shame too on DIYnot.com Forum for allowing such a glaring example of man's inhumanity to man to remain for all to see.

Yes indeed....not only can they contact the council regarding their housing and associated internal fixtures and fittings, but it's a vital tool to contact the remaining extended family to spread the good news.:LOL:

Yeah Yeah yeah eight year old with a v expensive smart phone.....funny how normal English people see this as extreme that an eight year old has such a high tech phone .... Thats the reaction of people who I've mentioned it to ..........teaches, stable workers, housewife's etc etc they all found it a suprising

Racist you cretins !

I've been called a racist .... really ? .I have close friends black, brown, mid brown.

Ok can you explain to me how I'm racist ....... I couldn't care less about the colour of a man's skin.
Recently my friend told me a work colleague called him a monkey when I said "You are ! "He said " Dave there's only you that could get away with that !"

Last week he told me someone he considered a good work mate called him a Nig Nog........I might be a lot of things ......but liar, racist, thief, crook I'm not.

The fact that I find somethings unsettling and suprising about people who have supposedly come here with nothing makes me a racist ......wake up !

I've never seen an english family across the whole social scale where a child has a galaxy S6 be it a chavvy type family or middle class ......the terms I've used are for identification purposes only ....not necessarily my view of the families.

Work out what you're trying to say !

Let me check.

Are you saying it's wrong for a person fleeing a war zone to bring their mobile phone with them?

Or are you saying that Syrian plumbers and oil-workers shouldn't have mobile phones? Did you think they all live in tents and ride camels?
