Could anyone suggest how we could improve this path. The tiles seem quite secure, but cracked and faded.

Aside from any maintenance on the existing (not sure if they are too far gone), is it possible to replace them by simply stripping them off, levelling and retiling with a new set ? Without pouring a new slab ?

Was this something you were hoping to do yourself? Because there are many companies in the south that specialise in this.

Absolutely lovely tiles, get them renovated by someone who knows what they are doing.
They'll strip and scrub them and source and fix replacements then seal them.

We don't have the money to get somebody else to do it ... competent diyer job only !

It's probably £1500-£2000 to get them done professionally, but the tiles themselves may be £250 ... from what I understand. We could clean them also.

Although they are largely intact they are quite faded and the green moss (whatever it is) has eaten the surfaces off many of them.

Not sure what the best option but laying a slab is probably beyond us

So just scrub them and seal them? No need to make it immaculate- the cracks are all part of the patina. (Perhaps improve the rest of the yard to match, i.e. lose the white bricks and concrete!)

Those tiles are worth a lot more than £250.
Start thinking more like at least £250/m2.
Cheap copies, cost more than £70/m2 for the middle bits and £15 per linear foot for the sides, and £25 for each corner. And they do not look anywhere near as good as what you already have there.
Please keep what you have, first try cleaning them with soap and water.

Thanks well if the new tiles were that much it would be quite dear.

I am encouraged to scrub them and seal them - will have to look them up.

What could we have instead of bricks ? They seem to be holding back the garden to some extent

You might just find some encaustic tiles at a recycling yard

It would probably have had border edging tiles or a stone edging strip. Look at other houses in the streets for inspiration. At the very least you could lay bricks horizontally, partially buried to form a neat, low edge, instead of just sitting on top of the path like that. If the garden is too high, just dig it out a bit. It's not rocket science.
