what utterly pompous comments from this 58K post count poster. Try babbling away like you do to someone who has ended up in a wheelchair for life from falling down their stairs.....

If I do, I shall be sure to seek your opinion, because given that comment you clearly must do nothing but babble all the time you are awake, so faulty are your thought processes and so low is your intelligence.

On the contrary - nothing but logic and common sense.

Logic and common sense says that statistics quoted by people to bolster their argument must be fully understood by them.

Logic and common sense says that statistics quoted by people to bolster their argument must be used properly, and with full context.

Logic and common sense says that people must take responsibility for their own safety related decisions, and not bumble through life expecting that someone else will have ensured that their bumbling never results in harm.

Most people accept the latter when it comes to crossing roads - they don't just step off the pavement whenever the fancy takes them, expecting that things will have been put in place to stop them being run over when they do that. So how about wooden stairs? How about the idea that if people see wooden stairs they THINK about it and don't go up and down wearing just socks on their feet? And how about toddlers on stairs? How about the idea that parents behave responsibly, and THINK about things and use stair gates to prevent their toddler from ever getting on the stairs unsupervised?

Yep - you'll find that, unlike almost everybody else on this site, my logic and common sense never desert me.

Not for you - you clearly find it hard to impossible to be logical, and to apply common sense. One only has to look at the kinds of suggestions to which you are objecting, and the kinds of arguments you are advancing to see that.

God Foxhole, please be the bigger person and let this one go.

You are quite right.

I will never get how anyone can think that it is OK to quote a figure of "4000 falls by children on stairs" to bolster their advice against wooden stairs when they neither know nor care over what period those 4000 falls occurred, and when they neither know nor care how many of them were shown to be caused by the stairs being wood, and when they neither know nor care how that figure compares to falls with other causes.

I will never get how anyone can think that they are making a useful and intelligent contribution to a debate when they dismiss as "irrelevant" all questions which look for some sort of rigour associated with their contributions.

I will never get how anyone can be so brainwashed by an H&S culture that they come to believe that people must never, ever, be expected to exercise any responsibility for safety and must be encouraged and supported in the belief that the entire world around them must be engineered so that no matter what stupid things they do nothing bad happens.

We shall remember that on the day you fall down some glossy stairs.
That will never happen to me, because I am not so stupid as to think that glossy stairs + wearing socks is a sensible idea. Maybe you, or the people in your life, are that stupid, but please, no matter how alien the concept of intelligent thought is to you, don't assume that everyone is, and please don't insist that the world has to be organised in a way which limits some people's choices because some other people are too thick to deal with choices.
