Came downstairs just now and found the the heat of the sun through my French doors has heated up and buckled my karndean floor.

Can't I get something to put on the glass to stop this happening?

You can get reflective film. It might also make the glass a bit more difficult for a burglar to break. it has a slight silvery appearance.

But I would be wondering if the floor was laid correctly, with expansion caps round the edges.

I laid it myself and there are the proper expansion gaps.

The planks went completely soft and were very hot

I've not heard of that happening before - perhaps call the Mfr's tech dept. They will probably want pics, the adhesive type, and wrapping # details.
Thing is, there's more and more glass being used in residential walls (& roofs).

Sunlight on "varnish" etc. & hardwood has been a forever problem - traditionally "solved" by re-sanding and finishing.
