I was having a look at plans from various manufacturers of diverter valves. Particularly I was interested in how much depth is required to house what is behind the front plate within the wall. My bathroom cavity wall can house no more than 90mm of valve from the front plate.

What I've noticed is that most provide this distance as a range distance as opposed to a specific distance.

For example, in the diagram below the distance behind the front plate is given as 80-105 mm (I've marked this with a red arrow).

What does this range mean instead of using a specific distance?

What is the diagram saying about the amount of depth required from behind the front plate to the back of the valve? That is, the amount of wall cavity required to house it?

The cavity wall, including the plasterboard and wall tile is 90 mm deep.

Does the diagram mean the valve could be set so that its depth could be 80 mm and therefore would fit within the wall?
