Yup it finally happened. Despite me being careful, using boards across the joists to move around, I stepped on a board too close to the edge, I slipped and fell through the ceiling. Managed to use the joists to stop me falling through completely.

Swmbo was up in the loft with me, she saw me fall and tried to grab me and unwittingly also stepping onto the plasterboard.

Feel free to laugh.

What's the best way forwards? Cut out and refit new plasterboard?

Reckon I would strip back to the edges of untouched boards and put a new section in.
Depends how good your plastering is as far as skimming goes.
I would fell inclined to tidy up the edges then get a plasterer in to patch and skim.
Unless you want to take the lot down for that lofty exposed beam look to the room!(y)

"Get a plasterer in." Good luck with that. Tradesmen these days only want to do jobs for £20,000 or more. They are not interested in tiny jobs like that. Tried to get, so called, tradesmen to plaster a room for me. out of five that I rang only one answered and he looked and that was the last I heard of him.

if it broke in a few large pieces, it's possible to put them back, like a jigsaw, using builders adhesive or nails, and rub filler into the cracks.

this will work better if the ceiling is not flat or smooth (e.g. artex)

You're not wrong.I'm trying to get a plumber,3 of the 5 are on holiday,1 made arrangements to come at the weekend, never turned up and won't answer the phone and the 5th failed to get back to me.
Wish I'd never started the job

I've got someone who can come in to do the plastering. I was going to square off the hole, fix some extra batons to where the new piece would go, measure and cit and fit the new plasterboard to the joists and batons with plasterboard screws and leave the rest up to the plasterer.

Sounds fair or silly?

Lots of big and small pieces. It was bad enough when I put my foot through but worse when the missus did the same - she took some plasterboard off the was next to the coving.

The whole thing was papered s over and then painted by the looks of things.

We called a local guy for a patch behind the rad and a bit to the side of the window, in a rental I was refurbishing, he came in on a Saturday and sorted it out in an hour or so can't remember the exact cost (cash) but it was quite reasonable.
Had similar service at my old house in Bromley too with another guy, I would avoid the big companies and just stick with a guy that works for himself.

They are all self employed plumbers who all come via recommendation.

Sorry for the confusion I was referring to the plasterers not plumbers, luckily as a retired gas fitter I never need one (unless it is gas safe work) but I have seldom found anybody that is happy with their plumbers too many cowboys out there. Unlike plastering which is a skill you can't fake, any one with a pair of grips and a box of plastic push fit fittings can claim to be a plumber!(n)

You're not wrong. The 'retired' plumber who started the job,his toolbox consisted of a carrier bag of plastic push fit fittings and 2 adjustable spanners lol.Not what I was expecting, but beggars can't be choosers.... he's now buggered off to Thailand for 5 weeks !!!
