Does anyone know a company in within reach of Herts that hires handheld trenching tools like these?

Yikes! That is one scary tool imagine hitting a brick or bit of re-enforced concrete with it, and no chain saw trousers on the guy using it.

I googled a few videos and if you think that's dangerous , some home made ones on YouTube are Darwin Award winners

There is a good machine called a "ditchwitch", used a few times, very neat job and very powerful. Should be something on youtube.

I can only see walk-behind machines on their website. Have you used something handheld of theirs?

It wasn't hand held, but had a very small footprint, about 600 wide by a 100 long. Unfortunately absolutely nothing like it on their website, must be discontinued.
Try ringing some hire companies, it must be available somewhere.
